The Ratings Impact of DVRs

Two years ago, Nielsen made significant changes in the way that it compiles its ratings information. The company started to measure commercial viewing, not program viewing. They factored DVR viewing into this by breaking down viewing into “Live” (watching a show the day of its broadcast) and then “Live + 1” (watching it the day after broadcast), “Live + 2,” etc. up to “Live + 6.” Generally, advertisers are only interested in the audience that watches a show within 3 days, meaning that the +4, +5 and +6 numbers are worthless.

Pandora's Success Story

A recent New York Times article profiled the story of Pandora. In addition to a lengthy overview of how Pandora’s music recommendation system, “The Music Genome,” was created and how it continues to operate, the article detailed the success of the service as a business. Pandora was already an up-and-coming star in the music world, but its iPhone app has taken it to another level. As of mid October, Pandora counted:

  • 35 millions total listeners
  • 65,000 new subscribers each day (more than half from mobile users)
  • 75 companies as potential partners, embedding Pandora into a variety of widgets and websites

Americans Are DIGGING It

Digg, one of the original social news sites, is still the leader. According to Business Insider, ComScore data shows Digg dominating the competition. In August, Digg attracted 17.4 unique visitors, almost twice what their main competitors attracted combined. Yahoo’s Buzz was second with 7 million, while Propeller, Reddit and Mixx reached just over 2 million combined. Digg credits a number of factors for their strong growth, including new features such as their integration with Facebook Connect, DiggBar and Digg Dialogs.

Radio and Online News Usage Increases

A new study by Opinion Research and online ad network ARAnet indicates that Americans are moving away from newspaper and televisions as sources for news and information in favor of online and radio. Although TV’s momentum in the study is negative, television remains the top source for news and information with most Americans. Here’s how the various media stacked up among the whole sample of 1000 respondents:

eMusic: Albums Lead Singles

eMusic is the rare music service, possibly the only one, which makes more money from selling album downloads than single downloads. And the trend appears to be accelerating. Albums made up 72% of eMusic’s revenue in 2008 and 69% of total sales worldwide since 2006. Data from Soundcan shows the opposite to be true with other download services. iTunes and others are increasingly drawing more revenue from singles sales, despite efforts to promote full album sales.

Google Making Waves

Google has just launched the beta version of an ambitious new online application called Google Wave. It’s a web-based application that combines elements of email, chat, documents and social networking. Google is referring to it as a “hosted conversation.” It lets multiple people, see, edit and interact with various types of content (documents, photos, email, etc.) at the same time.

Which Media Subscriber Services Are Growing?

The Silicon Alley Insider recently published a story about the most successful paid media services. Compiling data from company reports, they looked at some major media services that charge subscribers for content, everything from pay TV services to Vonage. They found that the pay TV services (cable, satellite, etc.) continue to attract new customers, even with the proliferation of free online options like Hulu.

FM Radio on Deck

Terrestrial radio has gone through a lot of upheaval in the last two years as revenues from advertising have fallen precipitously. Meanwhile, online and mobile radio offerings have increased the level of competition for listeners. After a few years of focusing heavily on HD radio, terrestrial stations have received some good news. First, Microsoft announced its new Zune HD music player, with HD radio built in.
