New Game: MLB on PSP3

Major League Baseball, through its digital arm MLBAM (Major League Baseball Advance Media), continues to be one of the most aggressive players in digital entertainment. Baseball has extended its reach again by offering subscriptions to its mlb.tv service via Sony’s PlayStation 3 video console. The service costs $99.95 per season and allows subscribers to watch most major league baseball games (subject to various blackout restrictions) streamed live. For $119.95 MLBAM offers a premium service which allows choice between home and away broadcasts, DVR features and more.

Pandora Dominates Internet Radio

Pandora, the hugely popular online radio service, paid 44% of all digital music royalties paid out by non-interactive Internet radio services. Pandora generated $50 million in revenue in 2009 and paid $28 million in royalties, actually managing to turn a profit in the process. While Pandora’s $48 million payment was 44% of Internet radio royalties, it represented about 1% of the total radio payout when terrestrial broadcasting is added in.

Cablevision’s PC to TV Media Relay

Much of the recent discussion about TV innovation has centered around 3D, DVRs and accessing subscription services on multiple platforms. Most of the latter category has centered around allowing users to access TV content that they pay for on their computers or mobile devices. Cablevision recently announced a new service called PC to TV Media Relay that will go in the other direction. Starting with a June trial, subscribers will be able to relay content from their PCs (i.e., photos, music, home videos, email, etc.) to their televisions. This new service will use a secure connection to stream the content to the television on a dedicated channel, accessible only by each subscriber.

iPad: Week One

Apple’s iPad has been a big hit so far. Apple sold 300,000 units in the first day and within two days these new owners had downloaded well over a million apps. As compared with the launch of the iPhone, Apple was better prepared for the buying frenzy. Even with the impressive sales numbers, the devices were readily available in many Apple retail stores. Outside of the first day, many buyers were able to walk into their nearest store to buy any of the 3 models (16GB, 32GB, and 64GB) in the initial release, without having to wait.

PMG’s Tommy Hadges and Pat Welsh were among the early adopters, purchasing their units within the first 3 days that they were on sale. This week, and in weeks to come, they will share their thoughts on the device. While others have talked about the various pros and cons, doing traditional reviews of the iPad, Tommy and Pat will take a different perspective, talking about how the device is changing their computing and entertainment consumption and the implications for the future.

Workarounds for iPad Video

For a variety of reasons, the iPhone does not support Flash video…the most common standard that many sites use to serve video to users. Most web browsers use a Flash plug-in, but Apple has declined to support Flash for the iPhone through its Safari browser; the same is true for the just-released iPad. But Brightcove has come up with a solution for publishers that use Brightcove’s technology.
