The Silicon Alley Insider recently published a story about the most successful paid media services. Compiling data from company reports, they looked at some major media services that charge subscribers for content, everything from pay TV services to Vonage. They found that the pay TV services (cable, satellite, etc.) continue to attract new customers, even with the proliferation of free online options like Hulu.
Their analysis looked at Q2 2009 subscriber data compared with the same period in 2008. Broadband Internet was the big gainer, picking up 3.5 million subscribers in a year. Here’s a list of some of the services they examined and how many subscribers were gained or lost in the last year:
· Broadband Internet + 3.5 million
· Cable VoIP + 2.5 million
· Netflix + 2.2 million
· Telco TV + 2.2 million
· Digital Cable +1.7 million
· Satellite TV + 1 million
· Rhapsody + 150,000
· TiVo – 100 ,000
· Vonage – 120,000
