Gartner reports that smartphones made up 19% of all mobile phone sales worldwide in the second quarter of this year. This is an increase of over 50% from a year ago. In many markets, such as the US and Europe, the smartphone percentage is well above 19%. Also, worldwide, there’s a different leader in the list of most popular smartphone platforms than in the US. Here are the top systems worldwide:
· Nokia Symbian 41.2%
· RIM Blackberry 18.2%
· Google Android 17.2%
· Apple iOS 14.2%
The top spot in the US is currently held by Android. And although Android ranks third in these rankings, consider that its share a year ago was just 1.8%.
Finally, Gartner’s report also lists the leading mobile phone manufacturers (all types, not just smartphones) worldwide:
· Nokia 34.2%
· Samsung 20.1%
· LG 9%
· RIM 3.4%
· Sony Ericsson 3.4%
· Motorola 2.8%
· Apple 2.7%
· HTC 1.8%
