Chris Anderson is editor of Wired magazine and author of the seminal digital article “The Long Tail,” which was later turned into a best-selling book. Anderson’s latest assessment of the digital landscape is an article entitled, “The Web is Dead. Long Live the Internet.” His theory is that the peak of the wide open, web browser based Internet has passed. He believes that the next phase of the Internet, which we have recently entered, is the one where mobile access rules.
In a world of mobile computing built on apps, rather than web browsers, people are still able to do everything that they want or need to do online, but without the necessity of going through the World Wide Web. This could even be a threat to giants like Google, since apps untether users from the browser. It’s a thought-provoking premise and it makes for interesting reading.
