Many Popular YouTube Clips Still Lack Ads

Kanye Interrupts Swift at 2009 VMAs

Google doesn’t release financial figures for YouTube, but others have tracked its performance as closely as possible from outside. The Wall Street Journal reports that video tracking service TubeMogul has been monitoring the monetization of the most popular videos. TubeMogul categorized the top 100 most-viewed videos into the following 4 categories:

·         Partner/Professional    36.3%
·         Pirated                         31.3%
·         User generated            23.1%
·         Ads                              4.5%

Then they analyzed the number of each that contained paid ads. According to Tube Mogul, all of the partner/professional clips have ads, as do a small percentage of the UGC videos. The total comes out to just 36.7% of the most popular videos have been monetized. Presumably, that figure falls dramatically the further down the tail you go.
