This new venture is a digital e-reader storefront designed to distribute print content via electronic readers, a market which is maturing rapidly with versatile devices like Amazon’s Kindle 2, the Sony Reader, Barnes & Noble’s new Nook, and the rumored Apple tablet. So far, besides Time Warner, others rumored to be part of this new venture include Conde Nast and Hearst.
A one-stop site to attract people seeking magazine content sounds like a good idea, but there are many questions. Will this site include different content from the print editions? How will they monetize it? Will they try to aggregate traffic to sell online ads (banners and video), or will they be looking to create a subscription model, or will it be some combination of the two?
Perhaps even more intriguing are the rumors that Hulu itself is considering evolving (some might say devolving) into a subscription service, at least to some extent. Officials with the site say that premium content has been a part of its long term strategy all along.
